We are currently delivering two programmes for rangatahi in Whangārei, Tenei tōku whare and Iti Kahikatoa, as well as delivering our internal Māori leadership programme, Kāhu kōrako, across the CLM network.
'Tēnei tōku whare’
This programme is supported by Te Puni Kōkiri, and is intended to strengthen cultural identity and hauora (well being) through the exploration of tikanga and pūrākau within the cultural landscape of Tai Tokerau. The name of the programme is inspired by the Ngāpuhi whakapepeha 'Te whare tapu o Ngāpuhi’, which describes the rohe of Ngāpuhi as a sacred house. The programme is delivered in a series of wānanga that explore this house and the Aroora frame work.
‘Kāhu kōrako’
This programme, supported by Te Puni Kōkiri, is designed to strengthen Māori leadership and cultural competency across the CLM network. It is inspired by the whakatauki ‘Me haere i raro i te kāhu korako, kia kai ai koe i te kai, kia whiwhi i te taonga’. With the kāhu kōrako, or white hawk, being referenced for both its maturity and rarity and verily considered the emblem of a great and rare chief.
‘Iti Kahikatoa’
Originally called 'Tahuna Tau Atu' this programme has had a change of name and a change of funder. Inspired by the whakatauki 'He iti, he iti kahikatoa' whereby rangatahi are, in this context, likened to the kahikatoa tree which although small in stature is a valued resource and taonga of the ngahere. The programme is a 6-month long employment onboarding kaupapa that supports rangatahi Māori gaining employment in the Sport and Recreation industry and in 2023/24 is supported by Te Puni Kōkiri.
